Ebook About
From one of Outside magazine’s “Literary All-Stars” comes the thrilling true tale of the fastest boat ride ever, down the entire length of the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon, during the legendary flood of 1983.In the spring of 1983, massive flooding along the length of the Colorado River confronted a team of engineers at the Glen Canyon Dam with an unprecedented emergency that may have resulted in the most catastrophic dam failure in history. In the midst of this crisis, the decision to launch a small wooden dory named “The Emerald Mile” at the head of the Grand Canyon, just fifteen miles downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam, seemed not just odd, but downright suicidal. The Emerald Mile, at one time slated to be destroyed, was rescued and brought back to life by Kenton Grua, the man at the oars, who intended to use this flood as a kind of hydraulic sling-shot. The goal was to nail the all-time record for the fastest boat ever propelled—by oar, by motor, or by the grace of God himself—down the entire length of the Colorado River from Lee’s Ferry to Lake Mead. Did he survive? Just barely. Now, this remarkable, epic feat unfolds here, in The Emerald Mile.

Book The Emerald Mile: The Epic Story of the Fastest Ride in History Through the Heart of the Grand Canyon Review :

Although 85% of the reviews are 5 stars I find it telling that many of the reviews come from those who have an intense interest in the Grand Canyon, Colorado River, white water racing, or dams, which makes sense. For those who consider any of these a passion (I'd add conservationists to the list too), this book is a must read. I'd also call it a must read for those visiting the Grand Canyon or planning a river boating trip. However, for those like me who have enough interest to consider this book but wouldn't call any of these topics a top interest, The Emerald Mile may or may not be for you depending on what you're looking for and what type of reader you are.I was expecting a great adventure story along the lines of Endurance or The Boys in the Boat... some historical & biographical background of those involved but keeping the narrative focused on the boat ride itself. It did not meet these expectations. Maybe 70 pages or so of the book is devoted to the ride. The rest is the history of the Grand Canyon's discovery, the controversy surrounding building dams on the Colorado River, the history of dory trips on the river, and background on the storm and flooding that made this the fastest ride in the river's history.Just because it didn't meet my expectations doesn't mean it's a bad book. It's impeccably researched, very well written, and each section naturally ties into the next. My rating is due more to my enjoyment of the book. At times I found it a slow read, but I'm not much of a history reader. I kept wanting to get to the race itself. The book is interesting, some of it is fascinating, but I found myself most enjoying the descriptions of trips down the river. At its heart this book is more about man vs. nature and conservation than an adventure story of the race down the river. If you're not a regular non-fiction reader or really interested in the history of the Grand Canyon and the building of its dams this may be too slow of a read for you.
I'm in charge of river ops for a dam system in the Bureau of Reclamation. When a friend's father handed me this book, I expected to hate it but I also wanted to understand some of what went into the operations I could review from 1983. This turned out to be a beautiful, balanced, thoughtful book. There's no right or wrong answer. There aren't any faceless demons. Fedarko treats both sides of the engineering/environment divide with compassion and draws such strong character portraits that you find yourself rooting for both.
